Taxon description
Pospolity, szeroko rozprzestrzeniony gatunek w Palearktyce z wyjątkiem jej skrajnych, północnych obszarów, znany też z Ameryki Północnej. Występuje zarówno na terenach nizinnych jak i wyżynnych, docierając w górach do strefy subalpejskiej. W Beskidach Zachodnich znajdowany przez Stobieckiego (1883) na Babiej Górze aż do samego szczytu (1725 m n.p.m.). Żyje w świeżych odchodach, zwłaszcza w krowieńcach na pastwiskach.
