Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w Europie od skrajnej północy do Francji (bez Pirenejów), północnych Włoch, Krainy i Bośni, notowany nadto z Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce chrząszcz rzadko spotykany, znany tylko z pojedynczych stanowisk. Występuje głównie w górach, w Alpach dociera do wysokości około 2300 m n.p.m., na nizinnych terenach północnych i wschodnich występuje lokalnie i rzadko. Znajdowany pod padliną, ekskrementami, zwłaszcza krowimi i końskimi, gnijącymi grzybami i pleśniejącym chrustem.
