Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie środkową część Europy, docierający na południe do północnych Włoch, Bośni, Albanii, Siedmiogrodu i Bułgarii, sięgający na północ po Wyspy Brytyjskie, Danię oraz południową Szwecję i Finlandię. W Polsce chrząszcz mało znany, notowany z nielicznych stanowisk tylko w sześciu krainach południowych. Zasiedla głównie tereny górzyste; występuje w jasnych lasach liściastych, widnych zaroślach, na łąkach i porębach, rzadko w ogrodach. Postacie dojrzałe spotykano od kwietnia do września; imagines prowadzą aktywny tryb życia nocą, żerując na liściach, za dnia ukryte pod opadłym listowiem, wśród korzeni i mchów oraz pod kamieniami. Jako rośliny żywicielskie piśmiennictwo podaje: podagrycznik pospolity — Aegopodium podagraria L., świerząbek orzęsiony — Chaerophyllum hirsutum L., maruna bezwonna — Tripleurospermum inodora (L.) Schultz-Bip., wrotycz pospolity — Tanacetum vulgare L., złocień właściwy — Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L. i chaber bławatek — Centaurea cyanus L. Rozmnaża się partenogenetycznie.
