Taxon description

Burakowski et al. 1983:

Pospolity gatunek obejmujący zasięgiem prawie całą Europę i Syberię (z wyjątkiem skrajnych prowincji północnych), znany również z Korei. W Polsce rzadko notowany, przy tym wiele danych o rozmieszczeniu pochodzi sprzed kilkudziesięciu, a nawet stu lat, wymagają więc one potwierdzenia nowymi materiałami. Występuje na obszarach nizinnych i pagórkowatych, zwłaszcza na suchych terenach piaszczystych skąpo porośniętych niską roślinnością. Żeruje na suchych trupach i strzępach martwych zwierząt, jak stare kości, skóra, kopyta oraz na wypluwkach ptaków. Poławiany przeważnie wiosną i latem. Obserwowano loty w godzinach popołudniowych.
