Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony głównie w południowo-wschodniej i środkowej części Europy, na zachód docierający do Włoch i Francji, notowany też z Kaukazu i Azji Mniejszej. W Polsce wykazywany z południowej części kraju, głównie z Sudetów i Karpat, ponadto z nielicznych stanowisk niżowych i na podgórzach. Zasiedla miejsca wilgotne w lasach liściastych, zwłaszcza bukowych. Bionomia poznana fragmentarycznie. Larwy zimują w glebie, przepoczwarzenie następuje wiosną. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w kwietniu i przeżywają do września, a optimum pojawu przypada na czerwiec. Chrząszcze w dzień kryją się w ściółce, wśród mchów, pod kamieniami i wilgotnym listowiem; w nocy prowadzą aktywny tryb życia — żerują na świeżych i zwiędłych liściach, nawet opadłych, wyżerając ich brzegi.
