Szeroko rozprzestrzeniony gatunek od Afryki Północnej aż do skrajnych północnych prowincji Fennoskandii, na wschód sięgający do Syberii i Kaukazu, notowany ponadto ze wschodniej części Indii. W Polsce występuje od Bałtyku aż po Tatry — dość pospolity, choć niezbyt często spotykany. Znajdowany pod opadłymi liśćmi, ekskrementami, napływkami, wśród mchów, na padlinie, w nawozie i pod wypielonym zielskiem.
