Szeroko rozpowszechniony gatunek w południowej, zachodniej i środkowej Europie, południowej części Fennoskandii, ponadto wykazywany z północnej Afryki, Wysp Kanaryjskich, Azji Mniejszej, Kaukazu, południowej Azji i Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce dość rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany, notowany głównie z południowej części kraju. Występuje wśród gnijących szczątków roślinnych nagromadzonych w grubszej warstwie. Na skutek rozkładu substancji organicznych podwyższona temperatura utrzymuje się na mniej więcej równym poziomie, umożliwiając egzystencję omawianemu ciepłolubnemu gatunkowi. Znajdowany w większych pryzmach kompostowych, w stosach nawozu, wysypiskach trocin koło tartaków oraz w grubej warstwie liści dębowych i bukowych na nasłonecznionych zboczach.
