Gatunek zamieszkujący prawie całą Europę z wyjątkiem północnych obszarów Fennoskandii. W Polsce, chociaż nie jest znany jeszcze z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie w całym kraju. Występuje w miejscach suchych i nasłonecznionych — na łąkach, pastwiskach, miedzach, zboczach oraz w widnych lasach i zaroślach. Żyje na przetaczniku macierzankowym — Veronica serpyllifolia L. Larwy żerują w łodydze, powodując w jej części środkowej i dolnej nierównomierne zgrubienia. Postacie dojrzałe spotykano ponadto na innych przetacznikach, takich jak przetacznik ożankowy — V. chamaedrys L., przetacznik leśny — V. officinalis L. i przetacznik pagórkowy — V. teucrium L.
