Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w znacznej części Palearktyki, w Europie rozmieszczony od krajów śródziemnomorskich do Wysp Brytyjskich, Danii i południowej Szwecji. W Polsce występuje na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich, nie jest jeszcze notowany tylko z Podlasia, Bieszczadów i Tatr. Zasiedla pola, łąki, trawniki, przydroża, rowy i zarośla. Żyje na różnych gatunkach koniczyn, z których w piśmiennictwie były podawane: koniczyna łąkowa — Trifolium pratense L., koniczyna białoróżowa — T. hybridum L., koniczyna różnoogonkowa — T. campestre Schreb., koniczyna złocistożółta — T. strepens Cr., koniczyna drobnogłówkowa — T. dubium Sibth., koniczyna biała — T. repens L. i koniczyna rozdęta — T. fragiferum L. Larwy żerują w zalążniach kwiatów.
