Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony niemal w całej Europie i na Syberii z wyjątkiem skrajnych obszarów północnych, notowany też z północnych części Kazachstanu i Mongolii oraz z Sachalinu i wyspy Hokkaido w Japonii. W Polsce rozmieszczony prawdopodobnie w całym kraju, nie notowany jednak jeszcze z kilku krain. Występuje głównie na niżowych i podgórskich wilgotnych terenach leśnych, a wzdłuż dolin rzecznych dochodzi nawet do południowych obszarów stepowych. Chrząszcz odbywa rozwój w martwym drewnie drzew liściastych, zwłaszcza w olchach, dębach, lipach i brzozach. Cykl rozwojowy trwa przeciętnie cztery lata. Larwa żyje w wilgotnym, butwiejącym, miękkim drewnie pniaków, powalonych pni oraz kłód, a nawet w martwych korzeniach. Po przezimowaniu postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w końcu kwietnia i przeżywają do lipca. Kopulacja i składanie jaj odbywa się w maju i czerwcu. Loty odbywają się przy słonecznej i bezwietrznej pogodzie w sąsiedztwie miejsc lęgowych. Chrząszcza tego zwykle poławia się pojedynczo na trawach, roślinach zielnych, krzewach i niżej położonych gałęziach drzew oraz pod odstającą korą i w szczelinach drewna.
