Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony na obszarach leśnych w całej Europie, ale wszędzie dość rzadko i sporadycznie znajdowany, tylko w środkowej części kontynentu częściej spotykany w górach, zwłaszcza w dolinach rzecznych. W Polsce z wyjątkiem wysokich gór występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze, nie znany jednak jeszcze z wielu krain. Znajdowany pod korą starych, powalonych i butwiejących pni oraz na hubach nadrzewnych.
