Taxon description
Gatunek zasiedlający większą część Europy i Afrykę północno-zachodnią, notowany również z Kaukazu, Azji Mniejszej i Iranu; w Europie Północnej granica rozmieszczenia biegnie przez południowe części Anglii i Skandynawii. W Polsce, choć nie jest jeszcze znany z wielu krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych, partii górskich. Występuje pod zmurszałą korą i w drewnie drzew liściastych i iglastych uprzednio zaatakowanych przez larwy korników i innych ksylofagów. W Europie środkowej bywa poławiany głównie na dębach i bukach. Jest silnym drapieżcą pożerającym larwy i poczwarki drwalnika paskowanego — Trypodendron lineatum (Ol.), wyrynnika dębowca — Platypus cylindricus (Fabr.), drwalniczka Saxesena — Xyleborinus saxeseni (Ratz.), drzewożerka jednożennego — Dryocoetes autographus (Ratz.) i kornika drukarza — Ips typographus (L.), atakuje również niższe postacie rozwojowe gatunków należących do innych rodzin, jak kołatki (Anobiidae), miazgowce (Lyctidae) i goleńczyki (Eucnemidae). Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w maju i przeżywają niekiedy do sierpnia; w ciągu dnia przeważnie siedzą w ukryciu, a w ciepłe wieczory wędrują po pniach i przeglądają otwory wyjściowe chrząszczy.
