Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w południowej i środkowej Europie, wykazywany również z południowej Skandynawii, Afryki Północnej, Madery, Wysp Kanaryjskich, Ameryki Północnej i Środkowej. W Polsce znany z nielicznych stanowisk rozmieszczonych w siedmiu krainach. Występuje najczęściej w środowiskach synantropijnych. Poławiany w wilgotnych pomieszczeniach dla zwierząt, stodołach, szopach, spichrzach, młynach, mieszkaniach, piwnicach i pryzmach kompostowych. Żeruje na pleśniach rozwijających się na resztkach roślinnych (słoma, siano, plewy), zbożu i jego przetworach, wilgotnych drewnianych ścianach oraz tapetach. Spotykany również w biotopach leśnych, na składowiskach drewna i w tartakach, na pleśniejącym drewnie i korze, na hubach oraz w starych gniazdach ptaków.
