Gatunek tworzący trzy podgatunki; podgatunek nominotypowy zasiedla dorzecze Dunaju, obszar wokół Morza Czarnego, Azję Mniejszą, Syrię i kraje kaukaskie; drugi podgatunek L. fuscoaeneus persicus Warch. występuje w Azji Środkowej, a trzeci L. fuscoaeneus polonicus Warch. po północnej stronie łuku sudecko-karpackiego. W Polsce notowany z nielicznych, przeważnie pojedynczych stanowisk w ośmiu krainach. Żyje na różnych gatunkach nawrotów — Lithospermum L. i żmijowców — Echium L.
