Gatunek rozsiedlony głównie w środkowej części Europy, notowany ponadto z Krymu, Kaukazu i Korsyki. W Polsce kornik bardzo rzadko spotykany, notowany z nielicznych stanowisk tylko w pięciu krainach. Opada gałęzie olszy szarej — Alnus incana (L.) Mnch., a w Karpatach także wierzby śląskiej — Salix silesiaca Willd.
