Gatunek występujący w zachodniej i środkowej części Europy, poza tym notowany z jednej południowej prowincji Finlandii. W Polsce znany tylko z południowej i zachodniej części kraju, przy czym w poszczególnych krainach notowany przeważnie z pojedynczych stanowisk. Zamieszkuje obszary nizinne, niższe położenia podgórskie i górskie doliny rzeczne, występując zarówno na terenach otwartych, jak i lesistych. Spotykany na łąkach, polach, w ogrodach w pryzmach kompostowych, w nawozie, pod wypielonym zielskiem, także wśród gnijących resztek siana i słomy w stodołach, szopach i stogach. W dolinach rzecznych znajdowany pod napływkami; w lasach — wśród mchów i opadłych liści; w dołach po wybranym piasku lub wapieniu — pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi.
