Taxon description
Gatunek rozpowszechniony w całej Europie, gdzie dociera do skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii; jest notowany nadto z Kaukazu, Wysp Kanaryjskich, Azorów, Madery, Ameryki Północnej i Australii. W Polsce jest rozsiedlony od wybrzeży Bałtyku aż po Tatry. Jest poważnym szkodnikiem drewna, które podlegało obróbce, rzadziej spotykanym w lasach w drewnie drzew iglastych, niekiedy także liściastych. W osiedlach ludzkich znajduje się go wszędzie tam, gdzie jest nie wysuszone i nieimpregnowane drewno budowli, mebli oraz innych wyrobów, między innymi dzieł sztuki w kościołach. Cykl rozwojowy jednoroczny, ale w zależności od wilgotności, temperatury oraz wartości odżywczej drewna rozwój larwalny może trwać dwa-trzy lata. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się od wiosny do sierpnia.
