Gatunek obejmujący zasięgiem górskie i podgórskie obszary w środkowej i wschodniej części środkowej Europy; z terenów nizinnych bardzo rzadko wykazywany. W Polsce notowany tylko raz przed około 50 laty, a dane o występowaniu na terenie byłych Prus budzą wątpliwości. Poławiany przeważnie pod ekskrementami.
