Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w prawie całej Europie z wyjątkiem skrajnych północnych prowincji Fennoskandii; znany poza tym z Afryki Północnej, Azji Mniejszej i Kaukazu. W Polsce rzadko wzmiankowany — przeważnie na podstawie dawnych znalezisk (od przeszło 40 lat w ogóle nie wykazywany). Chrząszcz grzybolubny, zamieszkujący zarówno tereny nizinne, jak i górzyste. W górach dociera do strefy subalpejskiej. Występuje głównie w gnijących grzybach naziemnych różnych gatunków oraz w hubach z rodzajów żagiew — Polyporus (Mich.) Fr. i wrośniak — Trametes Fr., znajdowany ponadto pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślin oraz na padlinie.
