Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w prawie całej Europie prócz skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii, notowany ponadto z Algierii i Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce znany z nielicznych rozproszonych stanowisk w różnych częściach kraju. Znajdowany pod odstającą korą drzew, na wywróconych lub ściętych drzewach iglastych i liściastych, w dziuplach, w próchnicy, wśród mchów, pod opadłym listowiem i innymi szczątkami roślinnymi oraz na owocniku żagwi łuskowatej — Polyporus squamosus (Hubs.) Fr.
