Motyl, dość pospolity w lasach liściastych, lata w VI i VII. Gąsienice żywią się wieloma gatunkami roślin zielnych i krzewin (czarna jagoda, malina, pierwiosnek, mniszek lekarski, babka i in.). Żerują jesienią i po przezimowaniu wiosną, następnie zamieniają się w poczwarki płytko w ziemi, w słabym oprzędzie. Gąsienice łatwe do rozpoznania po ciemnoczerwonobrązowym ubarwieniu i białej podwójnej strzałce na końcowym pierścieniu.
