Burakowski et al. 2000:

Gatunek opisany z Ameryki Północnej, rozprzestrzeniony w Europie, Azji wraz z Japonią i Sachalinem, Afryce Północnej i w Australii. W Europie Północnej notowany z Fennoskandii i Karelii, w Europie Środkowej z krajów Beneluksu, Danii, Niemiec, Austrii, Czech, Moraw i Słowacji. Występuje w lasach, ogrodach, parkach, dolinach rzecznych, zasiedlając gniazda dziuplaków i ptasie skrzynki lęgowe, spotykany również na padlinie. Z Polski niedawno wykazany na podstawie jednego okazu odłowionego w dąbrowie, w budce lęgowej zasiedlonej przez muchołówkę.
