Pospolity gatunek europejsko-syberyjski, szeroko rozpowszechniony w prawie całej Europie i Syberii, wykazywany również z Kaukazu, Azji Mniejszej i Ameryki Północnej. Zasiedla drobne, efemeryczne zbiorniki wodne, spotykany często w płytkich kałużach i rozlewiskach.
