Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący południową i środkową część Europy, sięgający na wschód po Turkmenię, Iran i Azję Środkową. W Polsce chrząszcz rzadko spotykany, znany z nielicznych stanowisk w dziewięciu krainach, przy czym z Pojezierza Mazurskiego i ze Śląska na podstawie wzmianek sprzed przeszło stu lat Zasiedla pola, łąki, pastwiska, przydroża, suche zbocza, widne lasy i zarośla. Jako rośliny żywicielskie podawane są: oset zwisły — Carduus nutans L., oset kędzierzawy — C. crispus L., ostrożeń lancetowaty — Cirsium lanceolatum (L.) Scop., ostrożeń błotny — C. palustre (L.) Scop., ostrożeń siwy — C. canum (L.) M.B., ostrożeń warzywny — C. oleraceum (L.) Scop., ostrożeń polny — C. arvense (L.) Scop. i chaber driakiewnik — Centaurea scabiosa L. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się na początku maja i rozpoczynają żerowanie na delikatnych tkankach łodygi. W czerwcu następuje kopulacja i składanie jaj. Do jednego koszyczka kwiatowego samica wprowadza najwyżej pięć jaj. Larwa żeruje na dnie koszyczka — wygryzając brzeżne partie kwiatostanu pozostawia nietknięty środek i uszkadza młode nasiona. Rozwój larwalny trwa około miesiąca. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w koszyczku, w końcu lipca lub na początku sierpnia. Stadium poczwarki trwa 10-12 dni.
