Gatunek zamieszkujący południowo-wschodnią Europę oraz południową część Europy środkowej, notowany także z Włoch północnych i Kaukazu. Wszędzie bardzo rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. W Polsce znany tylko z czterech krain południowych. Postacie dojrzałe poławiano od połowy maja do połowy czerwca. Larwy żerują wśród przegrzybiałych szczątków roślinnych nagromadzonych w gniazdach przez mrówki z rodzaju Formica L. oraz w zmurszałym drewnie w sąsiedztwie gniazd i chodników mrówek z rodzaju Lasius Fabr.
