Gatunek palearktyczny, w Europie szeroko rozprzestrzeniony od krajów śródziemnomorskich aż do Fennoskandii, gdzie sięga daleko poza koło podbiegunowe. Notowany również z Ameryki Północnej. Jeden z najpospolitszych gatunków kusakowatych. W Polsce notowany od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, jakkolwiek dotychczas nie wykazany z kilku krain. Występuje przeważnie na obszarach lesistych wśród wilgotnych mchów i opadłego listowia oraz w grzybach, rzadziej znajdowany na polach i łąkach pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi i nawozem.
