Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony głównie w zachodniej i środkowej Europie, nadto notowany z południowych prowincji Szwecji oraz z górskich rejonów w Hiszpanii, Włoszech, Bośni i Macedonii. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie wszędzie, ale brak udokumentowanych danych z wielu krain. Zamieszkuje tereny nizinne i górzyste. Spotykany w lasach wilgotnych wśród mchów, pod opadłym listowiem, w detrytusie, na pastwiskach pod ekskrementami i gnijącymi roślinami, a na pobrzeżach wód pod napływkami.
