Gatunek zamieszkujący środkową i południową część Europy, notowany ponadto z Kaukazu, Azji Mniejszej i Algierii. W Polsce, aczkolwiek nie znany jeszcze z niektórych krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze prócz wyższych partii górskich. Zasiedla głównie ciepłe i suche środowiska. Żyje na dziurawcu kosmatym — Hypericum hirsutum L., dziurawcu zwyczajnym — H. perforatum L. i dziurawcu rozesłanym — H. humifusum L. Postacie dojrzałe odżywiają się tkankami liści, wygryzając w nich otwory. Larwy żerują w puszkach owocowych, gdzie wyżerają niedojrzałe nasiona. W jednej puszce może występować wiele larw. Przepoczwarczenie następuje pod koniec lipca, niektóre opóźnione larwy znajdowano jeszcze w końcu sierpnia w towarzystwie poczwarek i młodych chrząszczy.
