Taxon description
Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie środkową i północno-zachodnią Europę, na południe sięgający do północnych Włoch i Siedmiogrodu, a na północ do południowych prowincji Szwecji i Finlandii. W Polsce dość rzadko i sporadycznie poławiany. Zasiedla jasne lasy łęgowe, polany i pobrzeża leśne, gdzie żyje w gniazdach kretów, myszy, chomików, królików, a nawet w gniazdach trzmieli. Omyłkowo podane przez A. Horiona (1965) stanowisko Wadowice w Galicji odnosi się do miejscowości Wadowice woj. Bielsko-Biała.
