Gatunek zasiedlający przedgórza i góry w środkowej części Europy, obejmuje zasięgiem większą część Alp, Sudety, Karpaty i Góry Dynarskie. W Polsce występuje w całym łuku sudecko-karpackim. Zasiedla pobrzeża potoków, wilgotne lasy i zarośla oraz moczary. Żyje na gwiazdnicy gajowej — Stellaria nemorum L., na której niekiedy występuje gromadnie; w Bieszczadach łowiono w niektórych miejscach ponad 500 larw i postaci dojrzałych na powierzchni 100 m2 (Borowiec 1984c).
