Taxon description
Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w południowej, zachodniej i środkowej Europie, na północ docierający do Wysp Brytyjskich i południowych prowincji Szwecji, najdalej na wschód wysuniętym stanowiskiem jest Jarosławl (ZSRR). W Polsce poławiany dość rzadko i sporadycznie, znany głównie z południowej części kraju. Gatunek o niedostatecznie poznanej bionomii. Wbrew nazwie gatunkowej nie występuje w grzybach należących do rodzaju purchawka — Lycoperdon Pers. lecz, należących do rodzaju tęgoskór — Scleroderma Pers., ale w grzybie tym znajdowano dotychczas tylko postacie dojrzałe, natomiast siedlisko larw nie jest znane. Poza tym chrząszcze spotykano w gniazdach mrówek Lasius fuliginosus (Latr.) oraz na głębokości około 1,5 m w starym gnieździe trzmiela — Bombus lapidarius (Fabr.).
