Taxon description

Burakowski et al. 1986c:

Gatunek rozpowszechniony w niemal całej Holarktyce, w Europie od Bałtyku aż do krajów śródziemnomorskich. W Polsce występuje prawie wszędzie na terenach nizinnych i w niższych położeniach górskich, nie jest jednak jeszcze notowany z wielu krain. Jest spotykany głównie na swobodzie, rzadziej w magazynach i składach, gdzie nie wyrządza większych strat. Ponadto jest wykazywany jako szkodnik kokonów jedwabnika oraz notowany jako drapieżca złóż jaj szkodliwych owadów leśnych. Zarówno larwy, jak i postacie dojrzałe, żerują na trupach rozmaitych zwierząt, głównie kręgowców. Znajdowano je również w muszlach ślimaków lądowych oraz w gniazdach namiotnika — Yponomeuta padellus (L.).
