Taxon description
Gatunek rozsiedlony w Fennoskandii, w północno-wschodniej części Europy, na Syberii oraz w północnych obszarach Mongolii, Chin, Korei i Japonii, sięgający na północ poza koło podbiegunowe, prawie do granicy rozmieszczenia lasów iglastych. Na podstawie chrząszczy z drewna importowanego z terenów wschodnich notowany z Danii, Frankonii w RFN i Wysp Brytyjskich. W Polsce dotychczas znany tylko z Puszczy Białowieskiej, co wiąże się z północno-wschodnim zasięgiem świerka, który jest drzewem żywicielskim dla larw tego chrząszcza. Zasiedla drzewostany iglaste. Rozwój larwalny odbywa głównie w świerkach — Picea Dietr., rzadziej jodłach — Abies Mill. i sosnach — Pinus L. Postacie dojrzałe ukazują się w czerwcu i występują do sierpnia, a największe nasilenie pojawu przypada na lipiec. Chrząszcze po opuszczeniu miejsc lęgowych wzlatują w korony drzew, gdzie odbywają żer uzupełniający, karmiąc się tkankami młodej kory. W ciągu życia powracają kilkakrotnie na żerowiska w koronach drzew. Larwa żeruje początkowo w korze i pod korą, a po zimowaniu wdrąża się w drewno. Przepoczwarczenie następuje po drugim przezimowaniu larwy.
