Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony prawie w całej Palearktyce, w Europie rozsiedlony od krajów śródziemnomorskich do Wysp Brytyjskich i południowych obszarów Fennoskandii. W Polsce chrząszcz pospolity, rozmieszczony na całym obszarze, ale nie notowany jeszcze ze Wzgórz Trzebnickich. Występuje na polach, łąkach, w zaroślach i widnych lasach. Roślinami lęgowymi tego chrząszcza są wyka ptasia — Vicia cracca L., wyka długożagielkowa — V. tenuifolia Roth i wyka płotowa — V. sepium L. Larwa żeruje i odbywa rozwój w strączkach.
