Gatunek kosmopolityczny.
Anholocykliczny, żyje na różnych trawach, zarówno dzikich — Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. B., jak i na zbożach — u nas na Zea mays L. Notowany jako szkodnik kukurydzy i zbóż w krajach subtropikalnych i wektor około 7 chorób wirusowych.
