Taxon description
Gatunek szeroko rozsiedlony w Europie od najdalszych rejonów północnych aż po leśne tereny górskie we Francji i w Europie południowej, na wschód przez Syberię docierający do północnej Mongolii i na Daleki Wschód; notowany poza tym z Alaski i Kanady. W Polsce, choć nie jest jeszcze znany ze wszystkich krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze. Jest to gatunek charakterystyczny dla wilgotnych, cienistych lasów iglastych i mieszanych. Pełny cykl rozwojowy chrząszcza odbywa się w ciągu trzech lat. Larwy żerują w martwym drewnie będącym w ostatniej fazie rozkładu. Głównym siedliskiem larw jest wilgotne, czerwono- brunatne próchno pniaków, powalonych pni i złomów. Larwy żyją przeważnie w próchnie przylegającym do ziemi, często poniżej powierzchni ziemi w korzeniach oraz niekiedy w wilgotnej, brunatnej lub brunatno- czarnej glebie próchniczej w olsach. Przepoczwarczenie następuje w lipcu-sierpniu. Postacie dojrzałe po przezimowaniu były poławiane od maja do lipca na młodych pędach drzew iglastych, na kwitnącym bagnie zwyczajnym — Ledum palustre L. i roślinach baldaszkowatych oraz w próchnie drzew siedliskowych, zwłaszcza świerków, jodeł, olch i dębów. Jest to chrząszcz odznaczający się dużą lotnością i niekiedy jest znajdowany w dużej odległości od miejsc wylęgu i w nietypowym dla siebie siedlisku — na przykład jeden okaz schwytano pod kamieniem ponad górną granicą lasu na wysokości około 1900 m n.p.m. (Tatry — Przełęcz Liliowe, 2. VII. 1923, leg. E. Mazur).
