Obszar zasiedlenia tego ryjkowca obejmuje Pireneje, Alpy, Sudety, Karpaty i obszary górzyste na Półwyspie Bałkańskim. W Polsce pewne dane o występowaniu omawianego gatunku pochodzą z terenów górzystych. Z uwagi na wymagania ekologiczne informacja o znalezieniu go na Mazowszu jest niewiarygodna. Wykazany z Legnicy przez K. Letznera (1871), ale później ten sam autor (1873, 1876, 1883g) oraz J. Gerhardt (1890b) podali, że wzmianka o występowaniu D. intermedius (Boh.) na Śląsku Dolnym opierała się na błędnym oznaczeniu. Występuje na łąkach, pastwiskach, przydrożach, rumowiskach, suchych zboczach i w widnych zaroślach. Jako rośliny żywicielskie podawano w piśmiennictwie chaber łąkowy — Centaurea jacea L., chaber driakiewnik — C. scabiosa L., miętę lekarską — Mentha officinalis L., szałwię łąkową — Salvia pratensis L., szałwię okręgową — S. verticillata L., krwawnik pospolity — Achillea millefolium L., ostrożeń polny — Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., marunę bezwonną — Tripleurospermum inodorum (L.) Schultz-Bip. i powój polny — Convolvulus arvensis L. Larwy przed przepoczwarzeniem wytwarzają białe, siateczkowate kokony. Postacie dojrzałe spotyka się bardzo często pod kamieniami, na ziemi i wśród mchów, rzadziej na roślinach.
