Szeroko rozmieszczony w Europie i na Syberii; zawleczony do Ameryki Północnej.
Gatunek holocykliczny i jednodomny. Żeruje na korze kilkuletnich gałęzi, pnia lub korzeni świerka — Picea excelsa (Lam.) Lk. Tworzy bardzo duże kolonie, które odwiedzane są zawsze przez mrówki i pszczoły. Należy do ważniejszych producentów spadzi.
