Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony od północnej Afryki aż do Wysp Brytyjskich i Fennoskandii; sięga daleko poza koło podbiegunowe, a w Alpach do strefy alpejskiej, wykazywany również z Syberii. W Polsce notowany od Bałtyku aż po Tatry, ale brak jeszcze udokumentowanych danych z kilku krain, a z niektórych rejonów doniesienia oparto na znaleziskach w ubiegłym stuleciu. Znajdowany pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinami, ekskrementami bydlęcymi i przy wypływającym soku z pni drzew.
