Gatunek euro-syberyjski, zamieszkujący prawie całą Europę (prócz skrajnych prowincji północnych Fennoskandii), notowany nadto z Indii. W północnej części Europy występuje na terenach nizinnych i pagórkowatych, w miarę posuwania się na południe zasiedla tereny wyżynne. W Polsce spotykany sporadycznie i dość rzadko zarówno na niżu, jak i w górach. Łowiony przeważnie pod opadłym listowiem, w pryzmach kompostowych i nawozie oraz w gnijących grzybach.
