Taxon description
Burakowski et al. 1986c:
Szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w całej Holarktyce, docierający w Europie do koła podbiegunowego. W Polsce występuje pospolicie od Bałtyku aż po Tatry. Larwy występują w gniazdach ptaków i ssaków, pod obluźnioną korą drzew, rzadziej w domach mieszkalnych i zabudowaniach gospodarczych. Żerują na wyschniętych trupach bezkręgowców i na odpadkach pochodzenia zwierzęcego. W okresie swego rozwoju linieją 6-10 razy, po przezimowaniu przepoczwarczają się zwykle w kwietniu, a stadium poczwarkowe trwa 9-10 dni. Postacie dojrzałe przebywają okresowo w kwietniu-lipcu na kwiatach, zwłaszcza białych, drzew owocowych, krzewów ogrodowych i roślin baldaszkowatych, gdzie żywią się nektarem i pyłkiem oraz kopulują.
