Obszar rozsiedlenia tego gatunku obejmuje południową część Fennoskandii i całą środkową Europę, na zachód sięga po Francję, a na południe po środkowe Włochy i Półwysep Bałkański, notowany ponadto z Kaukazu i Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce na ogół rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. Żyje w grzybach — znajdowany w rycerzyku czerwonozłotym — Tricholomopsis rutilans (Schaeff.) Fr. i w łuskwiakach — Pholiota sp. i Hypholoma sp.
