Gatunek rozmieszczony od Wysp Brytyjskich i Szwecji południowej przez całą środkową część Europy aż do krajów śródziemnomorskich, wykazywany także z Syberii oraz Ameryki Północnej (jako importowany). W Polsce, choć nie notowany jeszcze ze wszystkich krain, występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze, prócz wyższych partii górskich. Zasiedla ciepłe stanowiska na terenach nizinnych i pagórkowatych. Pojaw postaci dojrzałych rozpoczyna się około połowy maja i trwa do lipca, pojedyncze osobniki poławiano również w sierpniu. Gatunek pojawia się nierównomiernie w poszczególnych latach, niekiedy występuje masowo, wyrządzając duże szkody, czasami zaś występuje sporadycznie albo nie spotykany zupełnie. Chrząszcze żerują głównie na jesionach — Fraxinus L., bzach — Syringa L. i ligustrach — Ligustrum L. Chrząszcze wydzielają silny, ostry zapach, odczuwany nawet z dużej odległości. Chrząszcze, znane jako majka lekarska albo mucha hiszpańska, były użytkowane w celach leczniczych. Samice składają po 40-50 jaj w ziemi. Larwy odbywają rozwój hipermetamorficzny w gniazdach błonkówek (Hymenoptera), gatunków z rodzajów Anthophora Latr., Colletes Latr., Halictus Latr, Megachile Latr. i Osmia Panz.
