Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w prawie całej Europie (z wyjątkiem skrajnej części północnej), wykazywany ponadto z Wysp Kanaryjskich, Madery, Kaukazu i Syrii. W Polsce rzadko i sporadycznie poławiany większość danych o rozsiedleniu oparta jest na znaleziskach z ubiegłego stulecia. Spotykany pod butwiejącymi szczątkami roślinnymi, w pryzmach kompostu i w gniazdach mrówek Formica rufa L.
