Gatunek występujący w całej południowej i środkowej Europie, na Wyspach Brytyjskich, w Danii, południowej Szwecji i Finlandii, notowany nadto z Maroka, Kaukazu, Azji Mniejszej, Zakaukazia, Iranu i Turkiestanu. W Polsce chrząszcz nadzwyczaj rzadko notowany zaledwie z kilku stanowisk. Występuje w lasach iglastych, na wrzosowiskach i na wydmach, przeważnie na miejscach suchych, zwłaszcza na glebach piaszczystych.
