Gatunek szeroko rozprzestrzeniony w zachodniej i środkowej Europie, na północ sięgający do Wysp Brytyjskich i południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, a na południe do Półwyspu Iberyjskiego. W Polsce chrząszcz rzadko spotykany, znany tylko z kilku krain. Zasiedla lasy iglaste, zwłaszcza sosnowe, nadto wrzosowiska i torfowiska. Poławiany w ściółce, pod rozłogami wrzosu, wśród mchów i w grzybach.
