Gatunek o zasięgu ograniczonym głównie do środkowej Europy, notowany również z kilku stanowisk we Francji. W Polsce dość rzadko spotykany, znany ze stosunkowo nielicznych stanowisk. Prowadzi skryty, podziemny sposób życia w gniazdach drobnych gryzoni, zwłaszcza kretów i chomików, ale również myszy, szczurów i świstaków. Poza gniazdami bardzo rzadko spotykany w murszu drzew dziuplastych, przy wyciekającym soku z drzew i pod opadłym listowiem.
