Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w południowej części Palearktyki, w Europie znany z jej części zachodniej, środkowej i południowej. Z Polski wykazany rzadko z nielicznych, rozproszonych stanowisk, tylko ze Śląska Dolnego częściej notowany. Zamieszkuje tereny lesiste, gdzie zasiedla stare, zmurszałe i dziuplaste drzewa i pieńki. Znajdowany również w pojedynczo stojących drzewach, na polach, łąkach, w parkach i alejach, nadto niekiedy w piwnicach i jaskiniach, w podziemnych gniazdach drobnych ssaków, trzmieli, os i mrówek.
