Taxon description
Gatunek rozpowszechniony prawie w całej Europie z wyjątkiem skrajnej północy, docierający na wschód przez Syberię aż do rzeki Ussuri; notowany poza tym z północnych części Kaukazu, Kazachstanu i Mongolii. W Polsce występuje prawdopodobnie na całym obszarze oprócz wyższych partii górskich, nie jest jednak znany jeszcze z kilku krain. Wątpliwości K. Strawińskiego (1954), czy rzeczywiście omawiany gatunek występuje „na terenie Lubelszczyzny" nie mają uzasadnienia, gdyż w zbiorze Sz. Tenenbauma znajdują się okazy dowodowe z tego obszaru. Jest to chrząszcz charakterystyczny dla torfowisk i leśnych terenów bagiennych. Larwy żyją w silnie rozłożonym drewnie o barwie od czerwonobrunatnej do brunatnoczarnej; zasiedlają one pieńki, fragmenty drzewa leżące na ziemi, a nawet wilgotną glebę torfowiskową. Postacie dojrzałe wykluwają się z poczwarki w sierpniu, przezimowują w komorach poczwarkowych, ale opuszczają je na terenach zalewanych wodą i kryją się pod odstającą korą, w szczelinach drewna i pod cegiełkami torfu. Chrząszcze zwykle są poławiane w miejscach lęgowych, a podczas bezwietrznych i słonecznych dni od maja do lipca także na krzaczastych brzozach, olchach i wierzbach.
