Taxon description
Gatunek szeroko rozsiedlony od Afryki Północnej przez cały kontynent europejski aż do południowych prowincji Fennoskandii, na wschód przez Azję Mniejszą i Syberię sięgający po Iran, północny Kazachstan i Mongolię oraz Kraj Przymorski. W obrębie areału gatunkowego w miarę posuwania się na wschód coraz częściej spotykany. W Polsce prócz wyższych partii górskich występuje na całym obszarze. Zamieszkuje tereny nizinne i niższe położenia górskie. Jest to chrząszcz charakterystyczny dla starszych, o większej średnicy, martwych, nieokorowanych pni i pniaków. Zasiedla wszystkie gatunki drzew iglastych, zwłaszcza ich pniaki pozostawione w ziemi na nasłonecznionych porębach. Cykl rozwojowy przy sprzyjających warunkach trwa cztery lata, ale może być przedłużony do 5-6 lat. Osiedla się w pieńkach lub pniach już w drugim roku po ścięciu lub powaleniu na ziemię drzewa. Samica składa jaja w chodniki larw chrząszczy podkorowych oraz drewnożernych (korników, ryjkowców i kózek), a w następnych latach również w szczeliny drewna, pod odstającą korę, w otwory wyjściowe kózek Leptura rubra (L.), Spondylis buprestoides (L.) i Rhagium bifasciatum Fabr. Larwy są drapieżne i saprofagiczne. Przepoczwarzenie następuje w sierpniu w powierzchniowych warstwach drewna. Postacie dojrzałe przezimowują w komorach poczwarkowych, ukazują się w maju następnego roku i żyją do lipca.
